Horses quarantined for fear of virus

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - The Indiana State Board of Animal Health has quarantined 45 horses at a Lake County stable after another horse there was found to have a neurological virus and was euthanized.

The agency said Friday the sick horse had equine herpesvirus, a neurological disease. It causes decreased coordination, weakness in hind limbs, loss of tail tone, lethargy, inability to rise and respiratory problems.

The agency did not disclose the name or a more precise location of the stable. A telephone message seeking additional information was left with an agency spokeswoman.

The virus is most commonly spread through horse-to-horse contact and particles in the air. The agency says people working with horses should not share equipment among them and should wash their hands after handling one horse and before working with another.
