Ind. man 1 of 6 winners in NY opera competition

AUSTIN, Ind. (AP) - An Indiana native is one of six winners of the Metropolitan Opera House's National Council Auditions.
Michael Brandenburg of Austin, Ind., was the only tenor among the 10 finalists chosen from a starting field of nearly 1,500 aspiring singers.
Brandenburg performed two arias with a full orchestra Sunday.
The six winners received a $15,000 grant for further study. The runners-up each received $5,000.
The National Council Auditions are in their 60th year and are designed to discover promising young opera singers and help develop their careers. The auditions are held annually in the United States and Canada.
Past winners include sopranos Jessye Norman and Sylvia McNair
