Ind. sheriff's candidate withdraws, re-enters race

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A former sheriff's deputy seeking to become a southwestern Indiana county's next sheriff pulled out of the race and then re-entered it amid questions about past disciplinary actions taken against him.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports Jim Tucker said Tuesday night he would end his 2014 candidacy for Vanderburgh County sheriff to avoid a campaign dominated by questions about those disciplinary actions.
But when he was told the newspaper still planned to publish a story about his past troubles, Tucker said he would not exit the race after all.
Tucker had been disciplined for allegedly lying, disobeying orders and failing to turn in a diamond ring found in a hotel's workout room.
The 44-year-old is set to oppose Chief Deputy Dave Wedding in next year's Democratic primary.
