NILES TOWNSHIP, Mich. (AP) - Federal authorities have launched a probe into a small plane crash in southwestern Michigan that claimed the life of the pilot.
The South Bend Tribune and WOOD-TV report the ultralight plane crashed Saturday afternoon in Niles Township. Authorities say the 49-year-old pilot form Elkhart, Ind., died after the plane went down in a wooded area near the Niles airport.
A pilot flying in tandem with the victim in another plane says they were supposed to be landing when the other plane crashed. The surviving pilot alerted authorities.
Police say the two planes were flying for a short time and the pilots were testing an antenna. The victim's name hasn't been released.
