Inmates eliminated in redrawn districts

TERRE HAUTE, IN.(AP) - More than 3,000 federal inmates incarcerated in Terre Haute will be eliminated from legislative districts when new city council boundaries are drawn this year.

The Tribune-Star reports each redrawn district will have approximately the same number of eligible voters.

Federal prisoners cannot vote but had been included in previous maps.

That meant that about a third of one district's residents weren't eligible to cast ballots.

Many cities across the country have taken similar steps as prison populations have grown.

Terre Haute officials hope to have about 9,500 residents in each district when the maps are redrawn.

The new districts are based on 2010 U.S. Census figures and must be drawn by the end of the year.
