Intense flu season prompts warnings

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Indiana Department of Health is warning that flu season is under way, and may get worse as kids head back to school after the holiday break.
The agency says so far the season is intense and wide-spread.
Since November, seven Hoosiers have died from the virus . At this point into the 2011-2012 season, there had been no flu deaths.
The flu virus can survive up to eight hours on hard surfaces, like railings, ATMs, doors and keyboards. From there, it can easily spread, as the average person touches their face about 18 times an hour.

Anyone with symptoms of a fever over 100 with muscle aches, fatigue, headache or cough should contact a doctor even if they have been vaccinated.
The flu shot takes about two weeks before it takes full effect, and it does not protect from all strains of the flu or other respiratory diseases.
