INDIANAPOLIS, IN.(WISH) - Seven cases of the West Nile Virus have been reported in the state this year.
The first death from the mosquito-born virus happened in Vanderburgh County. State officials will not disclose any information about the victim.
Confirmed cases of West Nile have been found in Fulton, Hamilton, Jackson, Monroe, Marion and Vanderburgh counties.
State Health Commissioner Dr. Gregory Larkin says everyone is susceptible to catching the virus and should be on high alert.
If you own a dog, Dr. Larkin says they can also contract the West Nile Virus too.
The virus is also known to infect horses, but there's a vaccine for horses and not for humans.
There's no vaccine or cure for the disease.
Experts say the symptoms can include fever, headache, body aches, swollen lymph glands and rash.
The health department recorded one death from the disease in each of the last two years.
The first human cases in Indiana occurred in 2002, when 11 people died.
