Lawmakers honor state song writer

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - Indiana lawmakers have honored the man who wrote the song "On the Banks of the Wabash, Far Away" a century to the day after that tune became Indiana's official state song.

The Indiana House and the Indiana Senate passed resolutions Thursday honoring Terre Haute native Paul Dresser for his song that pays homage to the Wabash River.

The Tribune-Star reports that in 1917, Maurice Richmond Music purchased the copyright to that song from Dresser's bankrupt company and gave two men permission to use parts of Dresser's composition in their new song, "Back Home again in Indiana."

Democratic Rep. Clyde Kersey of Terre Haute notes that newer song is sung at the start of each Indianapolis 500. But he says Dresser's song is still the official state song.
