SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - U.S. Rep. Joe Donnelly has noted the University of Notre Dame's 170th anniversary in the Congressional record.
The northern Indiana Democrat and Notre Dame alumnus recently submitted a speech commemorating the anniversary Monday on behalf of Indiana's entire congressional delegation.
The Roman Catholic university in South Bend was started by the Rev. Edward Sorin of the Congregation of Holy Cross on Nov. 26, 1842.
Donnelly said in the speech the university's mission is to cultivate in its students not only an appreciation for the great achievements of human beings, but also a love of God and a disciplined sensibility to the poverty, injustice, and oppression that burden the lives of many people.
Notre Dame has about 12,000 students overall, including 8,400 undergraduates.
