Library accepts food donations in place of late fees

SEYMOUR, Ind. (AP) - A southern Indiana library is giving customers facing fines for overdue books another option to settle their accounts.
The Jackson County Public Library is allowing customers to settle their fines by donating nonperishable food items between Oct. 14 and Oct. 27. At least one food item must be donated for every dollar owed in fines.
Food items must not be expired and can't be rusty, dented or USDA commodities.
The items donated as part of the Food for Fines program will be given to local food pantries in Seymour, Crothersville and Medora.
The Tribune reports the Food for Fines program has collected nearly 70,000 items and waived more than $56,000 in fines since 1991.
The program applies to all Jackson County Public Library materials.
