INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The wait for the bee is officially over. The 2012 Scripps National Spelling Bee kicked off their competition Wednesday morning in National Harbor, Md. In this year's national spelling bee competition, there are 278 spellers from all over the world, with twelve of those competitors being from Indiana.

The Hoosier spellers range in age from 11 to 14 and have all won spelling bees at their school and local levels. In preparation for the next level of competition, students have used a variety of materials provided by their sponsors along with a Merriam-Webster dictionary and thesaurus.
This year's competition will introduce the youngest speller on record, a 6- year- old girl from Woodbridge, Va.
It has been four years since an Indiana native has won the bee, but with seven in the running, there is a possibility a Hoosier could win this year's competition.
Last year's winning word came from Sukanya Roy from Wilkes-Barre, Penn. He successfully spelled cymotrichous. Click here for a list of all winning words from past years.
The competition will last until Thursday and will be aired live on ESPN and ESPN2.
