Man seeks lesser sentence in $1.4M fraud

HAMMOND, Ind. (AP) - A Crown Point man who pleaded guilty to running a food stamp scheme that netted $1.4 million is asking a federal judge to give him a sentence below what federal guidelines call for.
Fifty-seven-year-old Adnan Shatat of Crown Point pleaded guilty in April to one count of wire fraud in exchange for prosecutors agreeing to drop the remaining nine counts against him. The Times of Munster reports (http://bit.ly/UoSEkf) that a sentencing memorandum filed Thursday in U.S. District Court in Hammond calls for a sentence of about 3.5 years to a little longer than four years in prison.
Shatat contends he should get a lesser sentence because he has no criminal record.
