Mayor admits electioneering charge

SCOTTSBURG, Ind. (AP) - A southern Indiana mayor has pleaded guilty to misdemeanor electioneering.
A plea deal allows Austin Mayor Doug Campbell to remain in office and avoid jail time. Under Indiana law, an elected official can be removed if convicted of a felony.
Campbell was arrested on felony vote fraud charges last spring after an Indiana State Police investigation alleged he tampered with absentee ballots before the 2011 Democratic mayoral primary in the city 35 miles north of Louisville, Ky. He allegedly picked up absentee ballots at voters' homes.
The Courier-Journal and WLKY-TV report Campbell entered the plea Tuesday in Scott Superior Court. He'll serve 180 days on probation and 50 hours of community service and pay a $500 fine and $350 in prosecution costs
Campbell says he did nothing fraudulent or unethical.
