Mayor: Fort Wayne safe despite 5 slayings in week

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - Fort Wayne has had five slayings in the past week but Mayor Tom Henry is reassuring its residents that the state's second largest city is safe.

Henry said Thursday that the city's 12 homicides so far this year all targeted specific individuals and were not random acts of violence. He says investigators have linked the slayings to drugs, gangs and domestic violence.

Henry also is calling upon Fort Wayne residents to work with police to help solve crimes. He and Police Chief Rusty York credit 911 calls and details from the public with helping to solve two recent slayings.

The mayor says York and his command staff are doing a good job of dealing with recent shootings.
