SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - South Bend officials are casting a wide net for the city's next police chief.
Mayor Pete Buttigieg said Tuesday the city will enlist an outside firm to conduct a national search for a successor to Darryl Boykins. The former chief submitted his resignation in March but tried to rescind it. Buttigieg rejected the request, and Boykins was demoted to captain.
The department has been in turmoil over a federal investigation into illegally recorded phone lines and allegations of racism.
Bob Wasserman says his Strategic Planning Partnership will conduct the search for $1. He plans to solicit input from public safety employees and residents before launching the national search.
WSBT-TV reports Buttigieg hopes to have a new chief in place by the end of the year.
