South Bend migrant housing gets safety scrutiny

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A former nursing home that is housing migrant workers this summer is drawing scrutiny from South Bend officials worried that the building isn't safe.
City officials say the 1968 building lacks a fire sprinkler system. They have asked the owner to halt operations.
The South Bend Tribune reports the nursing home was allowed to operate without a sprinkler because it opened before the requirement took effect. Building commissioner Chuck Bulot says that's not the case now that the building's use has changed.
Bulot says building owners have indicated they plan to house migrants until Aug. 22 and eventually plan to install a sprinkler system and reopen the building as a managed-care facility.
Representatives for owner MFC South Bend Holdings did not respond to requests seeking comment.
