Millions available in unclaimed cash

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - The Indiana Attorney General's office says millions of dollars in unclaimed cash are available for Hoosiers.

The state total is $350 million, of which $119 million is owed to Central Indiana and $60.7 million is owed Marion County.

At the Indiana Unclaimed website , residents can type in their first and last name. The site will indicate immediately if money is owed and how much. Then, a claim form must be completed and sent electronically to the attorney general's office.

The money is returned to Hoosiers, on average, within a month.

“When they can't find, after a diligent search, the rightful owner, then it goes to the state,” Indiana Attorney General Greg Zoeller said. “And then it becomes our responsibility. And, again, our focus is looking for the rightful owner of this property.”

Every county in the state is owed money, too.

County funds are usually deposited into that county’s general fund. If the money came from a specific account, it will be returned to that account.

Funds are held for 25 years before being turned over to the state.
