GREENWOOD, Ind. (AP) - A water tower that has spooked many pilots approaching the Greenwood Municipal Airport will be demolished this fall as part of improvements to the facility.
The Daily Journal reports Greenwood has reached an agreement with Indiana American Water Co. to raze the tower that's loomed over a golf course since the 1970s.
Mayor Mark Myers says removing the tower will improve safety and could increase business by making pilots feel safer. The work also will allow the airport to install new equipment to help pilots land during bad weather.
The tower hasn't been used in at least five years. Myers says the metal will be sold to help recoup the demolition cost.
The airport also plans to lengthen its runway in hopes of bringing in more traffic.
