INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - A school bus carrying 19 Broad Ripple High School students struck an out of control car, killing its driver Friday morning along Keystone Avenue.

Indianapolis Metro Police were called to the scene near the intersection of Keystone and 38th Street around 6:55 a.m. only to find the school bus in someone’s front yard and a mangled Ford Focus.

According to IMPD, 22-year-old Keon Wills was driving erratically in Ford Focus when he struck a curb and lost control. The Focus crossed into the past of an ISP school bus. The bus struck Wills’ car on the passenger side. He was taken to Methodist Hospital where he was later pronounced dead.
So far, there are no reports of anyone seriously hurt on the school bus.
Residents on that stretch of Keystone Avenue say they rushed home when the heard the news.

“My initial reactions was the kids … I was thinking of the kids so I said a quick prayer,” said Larry Beasley who owns the home next door to where the bud ended up.

“I called my husband back. Where the people in the house next door okay? Did it hit the house, is everybody okay? I was just concerned about the people and the kids on the bus,” said resident Bridget Beasley.

Police tell 24 Hour News 8 that the bus driver helped keep the students safe.

“The bus driver did an exceptional job keeping control of bus,” said Lt. Jeff Duhamell, IMPD.

While police say witnesses report the driver was out of control, nearby residents also say that narrow curbs on Keystone Ave could also have contributed to the accident.

Police say they’re still investigating this crash to see if they can figure out exactly why the driver, Keon Wills, was driving erratically Friday morning.
