Plan would keep jets at Fort Wayne Guard base

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - The Indiana Air National Guard says A-10 Thunderbolt combat jets will remain at its Fort Wayne base under the new national military spending plan.
The Guard says the military spending plan signed this week by President Barack Obama will keep Fort Wayne's 122nd Fighter Wing flying the A-10s "well into the future."
The military spending bill was the latest step in Congress slowing the Air Force's plans to cut spending at many Air National Guard bases across the country.
The proposal announced in February included retiring 20 of the A-10 jets operated by the Guard in Fort Wayne and replacing them with half as many surveillance planes. That would have eliminated 152 full- and part-time jobs at the base, which employs 1,200 people.
