Planners: Crematory could lower Ind. funeral costs

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) — A new crematory to be built in Fort Wayne could lower the costs of funerals in northeastern Indiana.
The News-Sentinel reports that the Catholic Cemetery has asked the city's Board of Zoning Appeals for permission to build a $2.5 million, 13,615-square-foot funeral home and crematory.
The cemetery was established in 1873 by Bishop Joseph Dwenger, The property is owned by the Diocese of Fort Wayne-South Bend.
Diocese spokesman Sean McBride says the project is a response to the area's relatively high cost of funeral services, which can cost up to $14,000.
Cremation was formerly considered unacceptable among Catholics, but the church has permitted it since 1963.
If the BZA approves the project next month, construction could be completed before the end of the year.
