Police make arrest after mailbox thefts

JOHNSON COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - Police believe they've nabbed the person behind multiple mailbox thefts in Johnson County.

Amy Jo Doyle was arrested Monday in Hancock County. Police say she was pulled over for speeding through a school zone, when the officer saw there was a warrant out for her arrest in Johnson County.

Police say at least five people in Johnson County reported in August they had checks taken from their mailboxes. Those checks had been written out to pay bills, but then were cashed for hundreds of dollars.

Bill Hogue was one of the victims.

“That morning, like everyone, I had bills to mail,” said Bill Hogue. Hogue realized something was wrong when he got a late notice in the mail, and saw on his bank statement that the check was cashed at Walmart in Indianapolis.

Lt. Eric Cox of the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department says the locations where the checks were cashed caught the suspect on video. They say Doyle used her own valid driver’s license as well. Police put out a warrant for her arrest.

“She was stopped in Hancock County on a simple traffic offense,” said Lt. Cox. “She had some suspicious checks in her possession during the impound of the vehicle, and then they did a search on the vehicle and located at least one of the checks from one of our citizens in our county.”

“It’s justice for all of us, because it’s a very unfortunate thing that it happened,” said Hogue.

Doyle remains in the Hancock County Jail. She faces forgery charges in Johnson County.

Police do believe there may be other victims in other counties. They say their investigation continues.
