ENGLISH, Ind. (AP) - State Police say a southern Indiana sheriff's deputy is listed in critical condition at a Louisville, Ky., hospital after he apparently shot himself in the head.

State police spokesman Todd Ringle tells The Courier-Journal of Louisville that 26-year-old Crawford County deputy Jesse Belcher is being treated at Louisville's University Hospital.

He says that early Friday morning Belcher had called another Crawford County deputy and hung up after a brief conversation. Ringle says the other deputy tried to call Belcher back but he didn't answer.

Two deputies were then sent to Belcher's home near English, where Ringle says they found that Belcher had shot himself in the head with a handgun.

He says it's unclear why Belcher had shot himself. Belcher had become a deputy in November.
