INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Indiana pork producers, in response to international reports of a pending bacon shortage , said Tuesday there will be plenty of pork in 2013.
Officials with Indiana Pork said their national group estimates no shortage, though there is likely to be an increase in the price per pound of bacon.
Higher feed costs are causing the problem. Grain prices have jumped because of ethanol production and the recent drought in the Midwest. The cost to produce bacon was 71 percent higher in 2012 than it was in 2006. Projections indicate production costs will be 82 percent higher in 2013 than they were in 2006.
The average cost of a pound of bacon at retail stores in August was $3.526.
