NWS: Straight-line winds caused Greene Co. damage

GREENE COUNTY, Ind (WISH) - The National Weather Service says it was straight line winds that caused some minor damage to homes and other structures in Greene County.

Power crews worked hard to rebuild damaged lines along State Road 43 near Solsberry. A strong storm blew through the area around 1 a.m.

Terry Hudson and his wife knew a dangerous storm was on its way.

The couple decided to take cover and spend the night in their basement. Their house was hit, but not hard. 

“I noticed something was wrong when the power went out, and that was almost instantaneous with all this,” said Hudson.  “I lost some shingles, my TV antenna and a tree which was uprooted.”

Right next door the Martindale Family wasn't as lucky.  Strong winds picked up the homeowners storage shed, slammed it against their house, and then blew it away. 

Because of the active weather warnings, emergency responders reacted  to the storm before it hit.

“We do not have tornado sirens in our area due to the unincorporated area of town.  We pulled our fire trucks out onto the pad, activated our sirens, and tried to warn our residents there was a tornado warning and it was headed toward our area,” said Eastern Fire Chief Austin Combs.

Damage to the area was minor.  No one was injured.

That left residents like Terry Hudson, relieved.

“For me, I feel very fortunate it wasn't any worse than what it was,” said Hudson.
