CHESTERTON, Ind. (AP) - The Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore plans to conduct at least three prescribed burns this fall, and possibly as many as six.

The largest prescribed fire will take place on about 328 acres at Derby Ditch, a wetland area just south of Beverly Shores. Another prescribed burn will be held on 11 acres at the entrance to West Beach. In the city of Gary, 87 acres will be burned in the Tolleston Dunes to benefit the federally endangered Karner Blue butterfly.

The National Park Service says three additional prescribed fires may be conducted if weather permits.

The Park Service says the dates of the prescribed burns will depend on weather conditions.
