Prisoners help raise fish for release

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) — Prisoners at a federal penitentiary in western Indiana are preparing to raise thousands of fish for two statewide fish-stocking programs.

The Indiana Department of Natural Resources will transfer about 5,000 catfish Thursday to the Federal Correctional Complex's indoor fish-growing complex.

Inmates at the Terre Haute prison will raise those fish for release next summer into 12 stocked lakes in urban areas around the state. That effort is part of a new DNR program to make fishing more available for residents in some of Indiana's cities.

The inmates also will be raising walleye, a popular sports fish that will be stocked starting next fall in selected northern Indiana lakes.

The inmates' fish-raising efforts are part of a partnership between the Indiana DNR and the Federal Bureau of Prisons.
