VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - Authorities say a reserve police officer accidentally shot himself in the leg while unloading his gun outside a northwestern Indiana church where he was picking up his son.
Valparaiso police said 29-year-old Daniel Glickauf's femer was shattered in the shooting, but no one else was hurt. Glickauf is a reserve officer for the Hebron Police Department.
Hebron chief Steve Sibbrell told The Times that Glickauf was expected to make an excellent recovery.
Police say the shooting happened Wednesday afternoon when Glickauf arrived at First Presbyterian Church of Valparaiso and was leaving his handgun inside his car before getting his 5-year-old son from a school program.
The Post-Tribune reports Glickauf was sworn in as a reserve officer on Monday, two days after completing a 40-hour training course.
