EAST CHICAGO, Ind. (AP) — BP's plans to buy up land in a historic area near its northwestern Indiana oil refinery is running into opposition from local residents.
Many of about 60 residents who attended a community meeting Wednesday night said they oppose BP's plans to buy land from willing sellers in East Chicago's Marktown neighborhood just east of the company's sprawling Whiting oil refinery.
Marktown resident Kimberly Rodriguez says she'll fight the purchase of homes and told residents the historic community is once again "at a point of crisis."
BP spokesman Tom Keilman tells The Times of Munster the company is working to identify property owners in the Marktown area and hopes to begin speaking to them in the near future about whether they would like to sell their property.
