SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - A shootout on South Bend's west side has left one person dead and another badly hurt.

WSBT-TV reports gunshots rang out about 10 a.m. Sunday. South Bend Police Division Chief Gary Horvath says one person died inside a home, and the shooter came outside and started firing at officers as they arrived on the scene. He says police returned fire, striking the suspect, who was taken to a hospital for surgery.

Residents of the neighborhood were asked to stay inside their homes while police blocked off the area.

Police did not immediately release the names of the persons involved.
