MADISON, Ind. (AP) - A historic southern Indiana courthouse that underwent extensive repairs following a 2009 fire is getting metal detectors and added security.

The Jefferson County Council has approved buying a walk-through metal detector and two wand metal detectors for the 1850s courthouse in Madison. The council also approved hiring a full-time and part-time security officer for the building.

The Madison Courier reports that the new equipment will cost $4,200.

Sheriff John Wallace says Jefferson County has seen a few close calls over the years at the courthouse, including one instance in which an attorney was assaulted by a client.

The courthouse was heavily damaged by a May 2009 fire, but it reopened in 2011 following extensive repairs.
