S. Ind. land trust acquires wetland in Evansville

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) - A southern Indiana land trust has acquired ownership of a 127-acre nature preserve a few miles from Evansville.
The Evansville Courier & Press reports the Sycamore Land Trust will take over control of the Eagle Slough Natural Area.
A partnership of local organizations and volunteers has controlled the former dumping ground since 2007. The preserve has wetlands, lakes and bottomland with large bald cypress trees. The site includes a nature trial built on an abandoned railroad track bed, an outdoor classroom and observation decks overlooking the lakes. The newspaper says bird-watchers have documented about 150 different bird species at Eagle Slough, which is located on a migratory route.
Bloomington.-based nonprofit Sycamore conserves nearly 8,000 acres in 26 counties and aims to protect 20,000 acres by 2020.
