VIGO CO., Ind. (WISH) - A man is in the hospital after his scooter crashed with two cars in Vigo County Friday afternoon.

Authorities responded to a three vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of US 41 approximately 500 feet south of Springhill Drive.

Investigators say 2011 blue Nissan Altima, driven by Shannon N. Grzegorek, 35, of Newman, Ill. was northbound on US 41 in the left turn lane when she began to turn and hit a scooter.

The scooter, a blue Taotao 50, driven by Brodie B. Evans, 20, of Terre Haute, Ind. was hit while he attempted to travel westbound across the northbound lanes of US 41 between stopped vehicles.

Evans’ scooter then struck a 2008 Silver Dodge Caravan, driven by Stacey L. Smith, 46, of Sullivan, Ind., who was stopped in the northbound passing lane of US 41.

Evans was thrown from his scooter and landed in the turn lane. He was not wearing a helmet and was airlifted to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis with multiple serious injuries.

A drug and alcohol test is underway for Evans, according to police.

Grzegorek and Smith tested negative for intoxication and neither driver was injured.

Grzegorek's seven month old son was in a child safety seat in the rear of the vehicle and was not injured.

The investigation is still ongoing and no traffic citations have been issued.
