Storms likely overnight, early Wednesday

INDIANAPOLIS (WISH) - Storms are possible for much of Central Indiana early Wednesday morning.

Damaging wind and flooding will both be possible with the storm. Isolated tornadoes are also a possibility. Any time tornadoes occur when it’s dark, it makes them harder to see. It’s also more difficult to alert people to their presence.

The line of the thunderstorms will move into western Indiana around midnight. Then, it should move east through the state and approach the metro area around 2 a.m. and linger until about 7 a.m. Wednesday. Most of the rain will exit the state through the morning on Wednesday.

A flood watch begins late Tuesday night and is in effect until 11 a.m. Wednesday for most of the area.

The Department of Public Works says it's ready. The city has more than 1,000 sandbags on hand.

If we have severe flooding, those sandbags are available at 1725 West 10th Street. Residents are limited to 25 bags for each household.

“We normally don't offer sandbags until we enter a flooding event,’ Lesley Malone said. “But we do see there is a possibility, so we always like to stay ahead and have them ready to go.”

Lee Humphrey says it's not everyday he can wear shorts in January.

“I just moved here from North Carolina and I am glad to see some warmth here in Indy this time of year,” Humphrey said while out for an afternoon jog.

But he knows the 60 degree temps won't last long.

“That is why I am getting my long run in today,” Humphrey said. “I want to get it in before the weather changes back.”
