VINCENNES, Ind. (AP) - Commissioners in a southwestern Indiana county say a nearly 70-year-old bridge recently closed will likely never reopen due to high cost of replacing the span.
Knox County Highway superintendent Ron Cardinal says the bridge on Vincennes' south side was built in 1945 along the original U.S. 41 before that road was replaced by the current four-lane highway. He tells the Vincennes Sun-Commercial a bridge pillar and its walls are cracking, making it unsafe for travel.
Commissioner Donnie Halter says the bridge would cost about $350,000 at a time when the county faces more pressing bridge projects.
County officials say emergency responders don't have any problems with the bridge closure, which has prompted motorists to drive less than a mile to use existing U.S. 41.
