South Bend smoking ban needs more support to pass

SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) - Supporters of a proposal to ban smoking in bars in South Bend need to gain the backing of at least one more city council member for it to win approval.

Four South Bend City Council members are sponsoring an ordinance introduced Monday that would change its status as Indiana's largest city to still allows bar patrons to smoke.

The South Bend Tribune reports the five other council members either expressed opposition or said they're undecided.

Council President Derek Dieter tells WNDU-TV he thinks it would be unfair to businesses for the city to have tougher restrictions than the countywide rules, which allow smoking in bars and in separate rooms of restaurants.

A statewide ban taking effect July 1 will prohibit smoking in restaurants, but exempts bars and private clubs.
