Spending plan keeps jets at Fort Wayne Gueard base

FORT WAYNE, Ind. (AP) - The military spending bill approved by the U.S. House would keep A-10 combat jets at Fort Wayne's Air National Guard base.

The spending bill approved Thursday is the latest step in Congress slowing the Air Force's plans to cut spending at many Air National Guard bases across the country.

The proposal announced in February included retiring 20 of the A-10 jets operated by the 122nd Fighter Wing in Fort Wayne and replacing them with half as many surveillance planes. The Journal Gazette reports that would have eliminated 152 full- and part-time jobs at the base, which employs 1,200 people.

Congressman Marlin Stutzman argues the Fort Wayne base should be fully utilized since it costs less than a third to operate when compared to active duty forces.
