Storm-damaged church demolished

OAKLAND CITY, Ind. (AP) — A southwestern Indiana church built some 70 years ago has been torn down after it was badly damaged in a storm over the summer.

Crews demolished Trinity United Methodist Church in Oakland City on Tuesday. It was deemed unsafe after the July storm tore the top of a bell tower off the building, tearing up the roof and causing a wall to bow out.

Minister Larry Stoops tells the Princeton Daily Clarion that congregation members understood that tearing down the church was the only choice when faced with a $150,000 repair estimate.

Stoops says he has the church's original 1879 cornerstone in his garage waiting for a new church to be built. The original wooden church burned in 1939 and was replaced.
