Suspected school tuberculosis case unfounded

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - Health officials say tests have determined that a person connected with a Terre Haute middle school didn't have tuberculosis as suspected.

The suspected tuberculosis case led to about 750 students and staff members at Woodrow Wilson Middle School undergoing skin tests in late May to see whether the disease had spread.

No cases were found in those tests but Vigo County health administrator Joni Wise tells the Tribune-Star that a second round of testing would've been planned if the initial illness had been confirmed.

Wise says she believes health officials did the right thing by reacting quickly to have the students and employees tested before the school year ended.

Tuberculosis is a bacterial infection that usually attacks the lungs and is typically passed through sneezing or coughing.
