NEW HARMONY, Ind. (AP) - The future of an 82-year-old Wabash River bridge between Indiana and Illinois appears to be in the hands of local officials.
A two-hour discussion between federal, state and local officials Friday in New Harmony ended with no consensus on the bridge's future. The Evansville Courier & Press reports that state and federal highway officials told local officials to take the lead if they want to keep a bridge there.
State and county officials say they can't justify taking over the New Harmony Bridge when motorists can use two other bridges nearby.
The privately owned toll bridge had provided a link between Posey County in Indiana and White County in Illinois, but was closed in May after inspectors determined the span was structurally unsafe for traffic.
