LEWIS, Ind. (WISH) - The identity and cause of death of a teen who was killed June 17 in an ATV crash in Sullivan County have been released.
John R. Chesterfield, 17, Lewis, died June 17 after the ATV he was riding crashed west of the town of Lewis. He was flown from the scene via medical helicopter to IU Health Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, where he was later pronounced dead.
DNR said in a news release Thursday that an autopsy found his cause of death was blunt force trauma to the head. Toxicology results are still pending, but drugs and alcohol are not believed to be a factor.
Indiana Conservation Officers, who are responsible for investigating injuries and deaths resulting from ATV accidents, said the number of such incidents was up in 2011 nearly 10 percent over 2010 crashes.
