ADAMS COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - Police say a teen survived after driving under the influence, crashing into a tree, and splitting her vehicle in half.
The incident happened in Adams County, Ind. on September 15 around 6:30 a.m. When police arrived on scene, they found a 1999 Mercedez Benz split in half and engulfed in flames.
Police determined Ashley Nicole Koehliner, 18, was traveling westbound on CR 1100 N when her vehicle began to drift to the north side of the roadway. Koehlinger over corrected, causing her car to run into a ditch before crashing into a tree.
The impact of the crash caused the vehicle to split in half and catch fire.
Koehlinger survived the crash. She was taken to a local hospital where she was treated for minor injuries. She was later transported to the Adams County jail, where she is currently being held for charges of driving while intoxicated and consuming alcohol as a minor.
Officials say Koehlinger's BAC was three times the legal amount.
Police are urging drivers to be careful on the roads and stressing the damage a single driver can cause if driving under the influence.
State Police say they made 346 DUI arrests throughout the state over the weekend as part of the Driving Under the Influence Enforcement Project. Police throughout Indiana were told to "aggressively seek and arrest impaired drivers."
The Indiana State Police are aiming to reduce the number of impaired driving crashes.
On top of the 346 arrests, officers issued 4,105 traffic citations and 6,646 warnings.
Police are urging drivers to report any suspected impaired drivers by calling 911.
