LAFAYETTE, Ind. (WLFI) - It's that time of year again for the running noses, coughs and fevers.

Emergency Room Doctor Alicia Sanders said the cold and flu season runs from about December to February, or even April. She said she even sees some cases in November.

Our sister station WLFI reports the best way to prevent yourself from getting the flu? Get the vaccination. She said if you can't or choose not to, there are other ways to be proactive. She said wash your hands frequently.

With the holidays, comes family time and being in close quarters with your loved ones. She said to avoid spreading a cold or the flu.. always be conscious of your actions.

"I know what it's like to have a lot of people in your home and to cook for a lot of people. You know sometimes, even when you're sick, you may want to taste the spoon and then use it to stir. Don't do any of that. Put it in the sink, put it away. Just make sure you practice good hand hygiene," Sanders said.

Sanders said some other good tips from spreading germs include coughing into your sleeve and carrying hand sanitizer at all times.
