NAPPANEE, Ind. (AP) - Residents of a small northern Indiana city celebrated a strong tornado that tore through it five years ago for the simple reason that no one was killed.
More than 200 people attended the ceremony Thursday in the Elkhart County town of Nappanee, complete with a cake decorated with the phrase "We All Survived."
The Elkhart Truth reports Mayor Larry Thompson recalled the darkness and silence after the EF3 tornado hit about 10:30 p.m. on Oct. 18, 2007. He says it was a miracle that no one was seriously hurt in the city about 20 miles southeast of South Bend.
Grace Point church pastor Terry Tyler says the storm changed the community's perspective and that residents saw God in their neighbors.
