DUGGER, Ind. (AP) - Leaders of a southwestern Indiana town have decided to sell the town-owned property where a 26-foot-tall cross stands in hopes that it can stay in place.
The Dugger Town Council unanimously agreed Monday night to have the less-than-half acre site and the cross appraised to determine the fair market value. The action comes after the town received a complaint from a Washington-based advocacy group about the cross last month.
The Sullivan Daily Times reports councilman Lane Lovelace says he wants the cross with the words "Jesus Saves" written on it to remain but wants to make sure the land sale follows the law.
Resident Louie Bonham helped build the cross a couple years ago and says he is interested in buying the land so the cross could stay.
