VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) — A Valparaiso University law school conference to review state drug sentencing laws is expected to draw judges, lawmakers, scholars and others.

Law school Dean Jay Conison says the daylong conference Friday is aimed at encouraging reform in Indiana and beyond. The name of the conference is: "Exploding Prison Population and Drug Offenders: Rethinking State Drug Sentencing Conference."

Conison says long-term sentences for low-level drug offenders are contributing to the exponential growth in many states' prison populations. The conference comes in the wake of Washington state and Colorado legalizing recreational use of marijuana.

Lawmakers in Indiana have been reviewing the state's drug sentencing laws.
