VALPARAISO, Ind. (AP) - The president of Valparaiso University is pledging 5 percent of his income to an initiative to fight extreme global poverty
The northwestern Indiana university says Mark Heckler is joining 27 other current and former college and university presidents across the country in the program called the Presidents' Pledge Against Global Poverty. They pledge to give 5 percent or more of their personal income to organizations that address the causes or effects of poverty in their communities and across the globe.
Heckler says that as a first-generation college student from a family of limited means, he learned from his parents the example of giving to those who had even fewer resources than they did.
