ELKHART COUNTY, Ind. (WISH) - State Police say a 31-year veteran of the force has quit amid allegations he stole checks sent to his State Police post in Elkhart County. Dallard Tackett, 58, is accused of stealing several thousand dollars.
A State Police report says Tackett, a lieutenant and commander at the Toll Road Post in Bristol, is accused of intercepting checks sent by prosecutors in several northern Indiana counties to local counties and State Police posts.
State Police say employees noticed infrequency in the delivery of the checks and notified their supervisors late last week. They say an investigation began and Tackett resigned during the course of the investigation.
Police say the investigation may take several weeks and then they'll turn the results over to a prosecutor.
