TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - Work has started on raising money to move a western Indiana county's Vietnam War memorial so that it is paired with the county's main veterans memorial.
The Vigo County Veterans Memorial Plaza was dedicated in 2003 on the courthouse lawn in Terre Haute, but the Vietnam memorial was built 15 years earlier on the other side of the courthouse.
County Commissioner Paul Mason tells the Tribune-Star ( http://bit.ly/IJOIUi ) that the Vietnam memorial wasn't moved then over concerns that its limestone walls could crack.
Mason says he and other Vietnam veterans worry that the memorial is overlooked because it stands by itself. He's helping raise $20,000 for a specialized company to move the 10-foot tall, 24-foot long limestone monument that portrays an American soldier and the outline of Vietnam.
