W. Ind. dump site filled with breached barrels

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (AP) - A federal official says an industrial site in Terre Haute is filled with deteriorated barrels that may have tainted the area with potentially hazardous metals.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency conducted an initial screening last month at the 39-acre former dump site along the Wabash River's east banks. EPA on-scene coordinator Sherry Lam says that screening showed a "high probability" of a number of metals in the soil.
She tells the Tribune Star final test results should be available in two to three weeks.
Terre Haute City Planner Pat Martin told the Terre Haute Board of Sanitary Commissioners on Tuesday that city officials were "shocked and surprised" by what they've found at the site. He says the main concern is whether the metals may have seeped into groundwater.
